About:
Karen, a proud SHSU alumna who graduated in 2001, was a partner at Crowl Cameron & Associates and a dedicated CPA.
She and Michael, both earned their degrees from Sam Houston State University. Driven by their passion to give back, they founded this scholarship to support students who are working their way through college without external help.
While attending SHSU, Karen worked two jobs—at a machine shop and an accounting firm—to support herself. She remained with the same firm throughout her entire career, always eager to collaborate with clients and find innovative solutions to their challenges. Outside of work, Karen was a music lover who enjoyed concerts and having fun, and she shared a love for fishing and family time with Michael and her son Zach. Together, they also participated in charity events and golf tournaments, often with their clients.
When Karen and Michael took over the firm, they remained committed to Sam Houston by offering internships for students during tax season. This scholarship was born from their shared desire to support individuals who wanted to work closely with clients in a small firm setting. Karen’s legacy lives on through this scholarship, which honors her unwavering dedication to community, work, and family.
Purpose of foundation:
The Karen A. Sumrall Cameron Memorial Foundation was established to honor Karen’s legacy by supporting the next generation of accountants. The foundation awards a scholarship to a dedicated student majoring in accounting who maintains a GPA that demonstrates dedication to their studies. This scholarship is specifically aimed at accounting students who aspire to work in a small to medium-sized firm and are financing their education independently. The foundation seeks to provide financial support to aspiring accountants who plan to pursue their CPA certification, helping them achieve their professional goals while upholding the high standards that Karen A. Sumrall Cameron valued throughout her life.
